Logitech's Video Calling Goes High-Def

Friday, June 18, 2010

On Thursday, Logitech announced an update to its free video calling service – it will now place video calls in high-definition.
The new Logitech Vid HD will offer 720p video calls between users who have HD webcams. Logitech also announced new HD webcams ranging from between $40 to $100, and stated one more piece of info about their upcoming Google TV: it will let you make HD video calls on your HDTV.
The new Logitech web cameras will offer at least 720p captures. The Logitech DH Pro Webcam C910 will be capable of capturing HD video at 1080p (though video calls over Vid HD will be limited to 720p). Since it's the new flagship HD webcam, it will feature a Carl Zeiss lens and have two microphones for stereo audio (supported via Vid calls) and will sell for $99.99.
The other HD webcams will be limited to 720p captures. The Logitech C510 will do 720p, and will have a mount that can spin 360-degrees; Logitech says it's so you can "swivel the webcam around and include more people on your video calls and recordings." The C510 will sell for $59.99. Less expensive 720p webcams will also be available; Logitech will sell its HD Webcam C310 and Logitech HD Webcam C270 for $49.99 and $39.99, respectively. All of the webcams will be available later this month.
Logitech also announced more information about their upcoming Google TV product – referred to as the Logitech Companion Box, though this will not be the official name when it goes on sale in the fall. The product plugs into your Internet connection, cable box and HDTV so that you can browse content from your TV and web via a user interface designed by Google.
On Thursday, Logitech revealed that this product will be compatible with the company's HD webcams and come preloaded with Logitech HD Vid for HD video calling on your HDTV. Similarly, in January Panasonic announced HDTVs that offer HD video calling via Skype. Logitech also said they will be releasing a Logitech HD Vid application for smartphones in 2010.

Communication Gadget Concept

Communication Gadget Concept

Presenting a concept gadget for communication so cool it is only known as the Communication Gadget. As you can see, that metal tube has some “pop-out” feet and can project a keyboard and some textual display there. I am assuming that there is some sort of sensor to detect the fingers tapping for input.

This isn’t the first time that I have seen a device with a projected keyboard before with sensors, but this one can directly to an ICQ server.

The text above this keyboard must be just text, and I don’t see any possibility of it doing any more advanced graphics than this. After all, it only has a red laser thing going on. I think that we all know that this is where computers and mobiles are headed. That is, a projector that can make a keyboard and display and make any wall, tabletop, floor, or ceiling into a PC.

You know what it reminds me of? One of those old pneumatic tubes back in the day. I don’t think anyone uses those any more, but my bank’s drive-thru still has them. This also reminds me of the LuminAR robotic desk lamp that MIT student Nathan Linder created the other day, presumably in his spare time.

A 3D laptop is coming -- Toshiba

Wednesday, June 16, 2010

Toshiba laptop computer:
 A 3D laptop is coming – Satellite A665
3D laptop? Yeah! Toshiba will be the maker of one of the first laptops with this great technology that intensifies the user experience when playing videogames or when using multimedia applications. Once again, the company is breaking the mold of the tradition in the computers industry by introducing its first 3D laptop: Satellite A665 (3D version). In addition, this computer is also the first laptop which comes with the new line of elements called “Sleep & Music”, which was entirely designed by the Japanese company as a way to improve the enjoyment of music, even if the computer is turned off.

The Satellite A665 laptop has an elegant and comfortable style and a great performance. It has a bright 15.6-inch 3D screen (in particular, it is a high-definition TruBrite screen – 120Hz) that could automatically transform your digital entertainment into a more enjoyable experience for your eyes by using glasses with the NVIDIA 3D Vision technology.

This laptop features the smart performance of a Intel Core processor and the surprisingly fast NVIDIA GeForce GTS 350M (graphic card). The combination of these two elements provides a very important potential which is very useful for fast multitasking or tasks that require brilliant multimedia. And as mentioned before, Toshiba has complemented this surprising computer with a new, innovative, and interesting feature: Sleep & Music; with this addition, you will be able to enjoy the music stored on your MP3 player through the laptop’s speakers without needing to turn on the computer.

Another of its high-value features is the possibility to add an optional Blu-Ray player; that is certainly a great way to increase your entertainment options. Many elements that have been included in the Satellite A665 were inspired by the observation of behaviors from different users and their needs; for example: The Premium Harman Kardon speakers with Dolby Advanced Audio, a case with special Fusion X2 Finish, and complementary software (Bulletin Board, Reel Time, PC Health Monitor, Eco Utility, Supervisor Password Utility, etc). No doubt, these features make this laptop a solid machine with a high level of performance.
