  DiskStation DS112

Synology introduces two new DiskStation NAS servers, the 4-bay DS412+ for small and medium businesses and the all-in-one 1-bay DS112 for office and workgroup environment. Both servers include SuperSpeed USB 3.0 for faster transfer speeds. They come with DiskStation Manager 4.0 and supports cross-platform file sharing, including mobile devices.

The DS412+ is powered by a 2.13GHz dual-core processor and 1GB of RAM. It can provide a maximum performance of 205.68 MB/s read and 182.66 MB/s write under RAID 5 configuration with Link Aggregation enabled. For enhanced reliability and high dependability with continuous service uptime, the server incorporates passive CPU cooling technology and built-in redundancy mechanism with two 92 mm system fans to prevent single point of failure. It has 2 LAN ports with failover support for high data availability. With hot-swappable drive design, the DS412+ supports up to four 3.5-inch/2.5-inch SATA II hard drives offering up to 16TB of capacity and supports Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 5+Spare, RAID 6, RAID 10 settings. It supports Windows ADS and ACL and is compliant with VMWare, Citrix, Microsoft Hyper V virtualization environments.

 DiskStation DS412+

The one-bay DiskStation DS112, on the other hand, boasts a 1.6GHz CPU and 256 RAM. It comes with a new enclosure design and is equipped with two additional side ventilation openings and a 60 mm rear fan that enhance the overall airflow to keep the system running cool while minimizing the noise level to 18.4 dB(A). It delivers an average 109.42 MB/s reading and 70 MB/s writing speeds in a Windows environment.

Both DS412+ and DS112 can be used as DLNA/UPnP Media Server, iTunes server, Surveillance Station, Download station, print server, as well as web server and FTP server. Of course, they can also used for backup with support for Time Machine.

A home server for all your media

A home server for all your media
Many Indian homes have more than one PC, since these are
more affordable than ever. Increased laptop sales are also
driving this trend. With each computer having a separate
collection of media files, it makes sense to host it all on a
central server, and create a home network. The Windows
Home Server lets you do this. Additionally, it can be used for
backing up all PCs, for managing software updates, and for
monitoring the health of PCs. The Windows Home Server
could also be set up as an FTP server, Web server, proxy
server or mail server. As you add more hard drives to it, the
server could also act as a central storage system. Files stored
on it can be remotely accessed.

DHCP SERVER

DHCP SERVER

DHCP is an acronym for Dynamic Host Confi guration Protocol. Once a range
of IP addresses has been defi ned on a DHCP server, it will automatically
assign them to computers connected to the network. This is done once the
system is started and recognized on a server.
First, a broadcast request is sent by the client to the DHCP server.
This message sent is known as DHCPDISCOVER. The router will then
send the packet to the DHCP. Once the packet is received, an IP
address is sent to the client based on certain rules that are set on the server.
This IP address is then reserved and an OFFER request is sent to the client.
Later the client sends a REQUEST packet to acknowledge the IP address.
Lastly, a confi rmation packet known as DHCPACK is sent by the server to
fi nalize the IP address for the client. This IP address may expire after a
certain period of time as set by the DHCP server.
This method of IP confi guration is used to make confi guration easier by
avoiding IP address confl icts.

A proxy server

Saturday, January 2, 2010

A proxy server is an
intermediate server system
existing between a client to
direct any access request to a
centrally locted server. Client
systems generally connect to
proxies to request services such as fifile
transfers, LAN or web connectivity, or
other LAN resources (printers, scanners,
etc) attached to the servers. They are also used
as a deterrent, i.e. to stop the client from accessing
certain resources either by blacklisting IP addresses or by using fifilters. Such
techniques are used by various organizations to curtail access to various email
sites and also for the searching of specifific terms on the Internet.

WHAT'S A VIRTUAL SERVER?

A virtual server is a basically a
partitioned drive on a main server.
Multiple virtual servers can be created
from a single server which would have
capabilities of acting as a separate
serve altogether i.e. a virtual server can
run a full operating system as well as
be rebooted without aff ecting other
virtual servers. First, the physical server
is booted in a normal manner. Once
the boot process has been completed,
a program is executed which then
boots all virtual servers on a machine.
Virtualization can be of two kinds i.e.
software virtualization and hardware
virtualization. Software virtualization is
mainly used for web hosting services
wherein the same kernel is used. In
hardware virtualization, hardware
resources are partitioned accordingly.
Virtual private servers are mainly used
for security purposes. For instance, if
you require installing a software that
might contain bugs, it would be wise
to install and test on a virtual server
so that the main server is not eff ected
incase it contains any bugs
